Rollins College’s new president was announced Thursday evening as Grant Cornwell, the current president at The College of Wooster. This morning, the Board of Trustees officially elected him the 15th college president, and there was a meeting to introduce him to the faculty.
The new president will be officially introduced to the campus at the rFLA launch at noon on Friday, Feb. 20. Cornwell will attend the launch events and the community dinner with his wife, Peg, who also has college administrator experience.
Cornwell was the president at The College of Wooster for eight years, and also worked as vice president and dean of student affairs at St. Lawrence University. The College of Wooster is located in suburban Ohio. It is a private, liberal arts college and has an undergraduate size slightly smaller than Rollins, with about 2000 students. The College of Wooster has 171 full time faculty, compared to Rollins’ 211.
Cornwell got a bachelor’s degree in biology and philosophy from St Lawrence, and he received a masters and a doctoral degree in philosophy from The University of Chicago.
Interim President Craig McAllaster will continue to serve as Rollins’ acting president until July first, when Cornwell will officially take over the position. McAllaster will then begin his postponed sabbatical. McAllaster originally took the position after President Lewis Duncan stepped down over the summer.
There were over 100 applicants for the position. An outside search consultant and a search committee made of faculty, staff, students, and parents has worked since the summer to attract candidates. The search committee was unanimous in its decision to recommend Cornwell for the position.
