Several offices work together to promote international education consistently throughout the school year, including the Office of International Admission, the Office of International Student & Scholar Services, and the Office of International Programs. International Education Week, for the tenth year in a row, runs November 16–20. The U.S. Departments of State and Education recognize and encourage participation this week to promote what we here at Rollins have made our mission: global citizenship.
Rollins’ mission toward global citizenship is taken very seriously, and a large part of the college’s approach to that mission stems from the different perspectives that students of diverse heritage bring to the table. International Education Week strives to emphasize our cultural differences and the unique perspectives we all bring to the Rollins community, fostering a greater understanding.
Events planned for the week include an annual photo contest, a Culture Fest taking place in the Campus Center, a Zumba class led by the Caribbean Student Association, a Diwali celebration, and, of course, the much anticipated Rollins World Cup Tournament—which usually has upward of 50 students, faculty, and staff competing in teams of five for the World Cup title.
Flags of different cultures representing the diversity on campus hang at the top of the Campus Center year round, but this week the Cuba, Guam, Hungary, Seychelles, Suriname, and Wales flags will be added to the collection as per student requests.
Currently, 243 international students from 60 different countries are enrolled at Rollins, and they make up a total of 7 percent of our student body.
Rollins College offers many strong international study programs, and this semester 120 students are studying abroad. Around 70 percent of students do so before graduation in locations as diverse as Greece, France, New Zealand, China, [and]Chile. There is also a wide variety of international field study opportunities, with some students traveling to Peru, Vietnam, Japan, and India in the coming year.
Large turnouts are expected for International Education Week. On a campus as focused on embracing cultural diversity and promoting global education, it is no surprise.
