On Aug. 21, Dave’s Boathouse debuted a new menu of lunch and dinner options, building off of changes that occurred last spring semester.
In March 2022, Dave’s was closed for about a month while undergoing renovations and rebranding to “Dave’s Boathouse by KIVO.” The previous update saw a switch from bar-style items like sandwiches and fries to Mediterranean dishes like Falafel, Gyro, and a variety of salads. The restaurant redesigned its concept to include kosher, international, vegan, and organic options to suit the evolving dietary needs of students.
Since The Sandspur’s last report on the topic, Dave’s has introduced a further revamped menu for the fall semester. Responding to student preferences, the restaurant offers a permanent á la carte menu as well as a rotating variety of specials that utilize seasonal ingredients, or produce that is grown and consumed at the time it naturally harvests.
The dishes reflect the restaurant’s growing focus on freshness and dietary diversity—or what Restaurant Manager Adena Muskin calls “a new concept of inclusive dining.” The á la carte menu “includes a lot of student favorites like fresh smoothies and desserts, in addition to some international-themed classics,” Muskin stated. “We also offer both biweekly specials and daily lunch and dinner specials, which can be purchased using a board swipe or Dining Dollars.”
Muskin is also the STAR-K Kosher-certified supervisor, or mashgicha, for Dave’s. A mashgicha is a spiritual supervisor who ensures the Kosher status of the kitchen.
In addition to the Kosher certification that was earned last spring semester, “the restaurant is now Halal-certified as well,” said Dining Services Marketing Manager Carolina Ossa.
Students from Hillel and Muslim Student Union have been involved in advocating for more Kosher and Halel options on campus.
“It’s a great and constructive change. I love the options that include Halal chicken in the rice bowls,” said Fatima Sani (‘24).
Transparency about food contents for students with dietary restrictions has been an important issue on campus, and both clearly defined labeling and detailed ingredient listing on Dave’s menu reflect this.
“In the past, I would only limit myself to rice and vegetable products because I couldn’t trust the source of the meat,” Sani continued. “As a practicing Muslim student at Rollins, it’s nice to have access to my favorite foods without going against my religious morality.”
Despite these changes, popular items like the “Angry Bird” and others are still available using their original recipe at Fox Lodge Grill. Located inside the Lakeside Neighborhood, Fox Lodge offers grilled entrees in addition to snacks, coffee, and grocery items.
Payment options for Dave’s á la carte menu include Dining Dollars, TarBUCS, or major credit cards. The daily specials are also available using a meal swipe, and are served twice a day during lunch and dinner. The latter menu allows for unlimited refills with each swipe, as per the student’s meal plan.
Dave’s Boathouse is open from Sunday to Thursday from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., and on Friday from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. The restaurant is closed on Saturdays.
