A New Route: Temporary Walkway Opens Following Tiedtke Way Closure

A brand-new pedestrian walkway has opened early today (Monday, Sep. 23) and extends from the Rollins Parking Garage to the Alfond Sports Center. The walkway has taken the place of the current section of Tiedtke Way, which will be closed to both cars and pedestrians.

Recently, this section of Tiedtke Way has grown narrower on either side due to the culmination of construction projects. On the lake side, cones extend into the road in place of the deconstructed Herbst Overlook, causing students to walk alongside cars for this stretch. The other side has consisted of barricades from the construction site of the East End Neighborhood, leaving cars the option to travel only one way and shoving them into tight proximity with pedestrians.

According to Assistant Vice President and Dean of Students Leon Hayner, the temporary walkway will provide better safety for students as it will be open to pedestrians only, and they will not have to walk alongside cars. Students will have a place to cross the street where the walkway merges with Tiedtke Way at the Alfond Sports Center. The new Tiedtke Way, set to open in Spring 2025, will also be more pedestrian-friendly as sidewalks will be available on either side of the road.

More updates will soon be available regarding both Tiedtke Way and the construction of the East End Neighborhood. Throughout the course of these projects, students can be rest assured that they will have a safe place to walk along their routes to both Sutton Place Apartments and the parking garage.
