A piece of precast concrete was dislodged and fell from the northern face of the Ward Hall residence building, according to a campus-wide email sent on Nov. 18. As of now, the exact timing of the incident is unclear and no individuals have been reported injured or otherwise.
Interim Director of Residential Life & Explorations Juan Franco sent an email to all the residents of Ward and acknowledged the lack of details, but he reassured that the college contracted professionals to inspect the edifice and plan for prompt repairs.
As for safety, passersby may have already noticed the primary entrance to the hall has been closed off with yellow police-tape and traffic cones. This is to construct a temporary “scaffolding tunnel,” as described by Franco, to allow for safe passage while repairs are underway.
While the email detailed that this entrance will be shut down on Thursday Nov. 18 from “approximately 4 p.m. and 8 p.m.,” the entrance is still closed off as of Nov. 19.
“What it mostly affects is where I meet up with my friends to leave Ward,” said Alexandra Besu (‘25). “We used to use the first floor as a meet up spot and leave for the day.”
In regards to entering the building, the main entrance is usually the only way in after 10 p.m. According to Residential Assistant Shania Thomas (‘23), this protocol has been temporarily overridden on the side and back doors and will allow for late-night access.
