This week the Sunshine State Conference released their preseason poll, selected each year by coaches within the league. In its inaugural year as a member of the SSC, Rollins Women’s Lacrosse was selected to finish second among the five schools in the conference. The Tars received 13 points with one first place vote. Florida Southern barely edged over the Tars with 16 points and four first place votes.
Women’s captain, Emily Eddowes ‘16, said that “with this being Rollins’ first season as part of a conference we are happy with the ranking, but are certainly striving to knock out Florida Southern this season for an SSC Championship.”
Conference play gears up on February 8 when the Tars host SSC rival, University of Tampa, at Sandspur Stadium.
The men’s team is also looking for success in the conference this season. Rollins was picked fifth in the Preseason Poll with nine votes. The Tars finished with a 6-9 overall record last season and 2-3 in conference games. Tampa (16-5, 5-0) was selected first, followed by Florida Southern (11-4, 4-1), Saint Leo (8-7, 2-3), and Florida Tech finished just barely over the Tars in fourth place (3-9, 1-4).
“The team is definitely working to build off of last year’s season and looking to defeat some of our major conference rivals going into this spring,” said returning defender Connor McClellan ’17.
Rollins will face Tampa February 28 in their first conference game of the season.
