Lisa Martin, New Smyrna Beach Vice Mayor and Zone 2 Commissioner, and Maria Salamanca, Orange County Public Schools District 2 Representative, will be coming to Rollins College on Wednesday, Feb. 19 as part of a special project by the Rollins Student Government Association (SGA) to engage students on campus through dialogue with government representatives. The two elected officials will be speaking to students about their experience in a real-world governing environment and their work with representatives of diverse bodies with varying perspectives and policy goals.

Vice Mayor Martin’s background comes from the private sector; she worked for thirty years in the communication networking field in Silicon Valley, California before being elected to serve on the New Smyrna Beach City Commission. The commission considers issues such as approval for zoning changes, development policy, and land preservation. Her district covers the coastal side of the city east of the Intracoastal Waterway, where current issues include the effect of hurricanes on the city’s shoreline and the development of Flagler Avenue.

When elected in 2022, District 2 Representative Salamanca was the youngest-ever member of the district board. A graduate of UC Berkeley, she worked for FWD.us, a lobbying organization focusing on immigration-related issues. She was the first Latina listed in Forbes 30 Under 30, having been included on the list in 2018. The eight members of the Orange County Public School Board include a chairperson, along with seven commissioners who represent districts within the county. The commission oversees the education of more than 200,000 students across the county.

The event will begin at 5 p.m. and will take place at Dave’s Boathouse. All students are welcome to attend. There will be an opportunity for students to ask questions about the roles performed by the two officials.
