Photo Gallery: Critter of the Week: Eastern Gray Squirrel

The Eastern Gray Squirrels are native to the Eastern U.S., commonly spotted around residential areas and Forests. They live amongst the trees but are always happy to make friends, especially when offered a snack.

Though they are called Eastern Gray Squirrels, their fur only comes in brown, black, white, and blond, not gray. They primarily eat plants, munching on treats found in the trees they inhabit.

These little guys can reach speeds of 20 mph, gliding across the ground and the treetops. They are known for their high-energy lifestyle.

Eastern Gray Squirrels are also big helpers to their local ecosystem, keeping tree populations under control by eating seeds and spreading seeds to new areas.

These critters are most often found in the afternoon as they are diurnal, meaning they are most active during the day. They can be found rummaging about all over campus.

The Eastern Gray Squirrels are quite silly little creatures, very friendly, and helpful to their environment, though it is best to leave them be and say hi from afar instead of trying to pet them. Still, they love to stop and chat with anyone passing by, so I hope this encourages you to say hi next time you see one of these little ones out and about.
