As the music starts and dancers take their places, they prepare to capture the attention of their audience and leave it all on the floor. Amidst the fast-paced and intricate world of dance, aspiring choreographers and dancers at Rollins College come together for the annual “Expressions Dance Concert” to feature both their technique and skill as well as their artistry and creativity.
Members and non-members of the Rollins Dance Association present “Expressions,” a student-led end-of-semester showcase. Piloted by RDA, the concert showcases varying styles of dance, like tap, contemporary, jazz, and more.
To be able to showcase their work, the student choreographers participate in the Dance Composition class in which they learn how to choreograph while enduring different challenges, like dancing without music or trying out a new style. Using the course material, students craft their choreography for the concert as well as collaborate with student dancers to showcase their best.
“I get to see how the students apply what they’ve learned in the dance studio and watch them grow choreographically and as performers,” said Robin Gerchman, Director of the Dance Program.
This enjoyment not only comes from the side of the supervisor but also the students. “Once we all get to performing, I think it all kind of comes together,” said Evelyn May Nielsen (‘26), a choreographer and dancer in “Expressions.” “I love seeing how different people choreograph when they’re teaching people.”
As the dancers perform, they are able to use the opportunity as an emotional outlet. Through this process, students can express what dance means to them and how it impacts them.
“I don’t think in words, I think in images and colors,” said Sarah Briscoe (‘26), another choreographer and dancer in “Expressions.” “Dance is a way for me to express what goes on inside of my mind on the outside, where other people can understand it the same way.”
The dancers display their works as the concert runs December 6 through December 7 in the Annie Russell Theatre. To reserve tickets, please contact the Annie Russell Theatre Box Office at (407) 646-2145 or boxoffice@rollins.edu.
