The Rollins men’s tennis team earned a 6-1 win against the U.S. Naval Academy this Saturday, Feb. 18., at the Copeland Stadium. This was the Tars’ first time encountering the Navy in the college’s history.
“We are sure that all the hard work and preparations during the fall semester have laid a solid foundation for us to do well, and as a team, we have high ambitions,” said student-athlete Mikkel Baumann (‘23).
Rollins took their opponents in one of three doubles matches, which gave the Navy one point. Baumann and Guillermo Castaneda (‘24) earned Rollins’ only win in doubles with a 6-3 score.
The Tars dominated the singles matches. In Court 1, Comu (‘24) took down Nguyen 6-0, 6-0. Both Quaynor (‘25) and Baumann had a 6-2, 7-5 win over their respective adversaries Pumpelly and McNair. Castenada earned a win from third position against Nguyen, with a 6-3, 6-3 score. Stoiberer (‘26) defeated Ballesteros 6-2, 6-2 and Stenzer (‘23) secured a victory against Liu 6-0, 6-1.
Rollins’ team is Division II, while the Navy is a Division I institution. The Tars have played three schools so far, with an overall loss vs. Flagler and a 7-0 win against Palm Beach Atlantic. The men’s tennis team now stands at 2-1 on the season and 1-0 in the Sunshine State Conference (SSC).
Rollins will play an away game at Lakeland against Florida Southern College on Thursday, Feb. 23. The men’s tennis team is currently in third place in the SSC and securing a win will boost the team’s confidence for the remainder of the season.
“We have a long season and many tough games ahead of us, and we are ready to battle it out,” said Baumann.
