The Rollins’ Baseball team has had a consistent and rewarding start to the season, currently standing at nine wins and four losses. The first games have seen individual triumphs in addition to the team’s success: during the third week of February, Nick Berger was awarded the first Sunshine State Conference Pitcher of the Week Award of the season after defeating the University of West Florida.
Aside from being an outstanding player and being claimed one of the team’s most consistent pitchers, Berger is a current Crummer MBA senior and graduated last year from the College of Liberal Arts with a Business Management degree. Having grown up in Winter Park, he was drawn to Rollins after meeting the Baseball team’s coaching staff and seeing the opportunities for students that the college had to offer.
Berger stated how special this player of the week recognition feels. “I have been runner up seven times in the past three years; it felt good to win one, especially in my last year,” he said. “Hopefully there will be another one.”
Berger said everything was working in his favor during the game. In the first inning the team had already scored eight runs before Berger came in and started pitching. “I just had to keep being consistent,” he said.
With everyone on the team doing their part and contributing to a persistent advantage, Berger was able to stay focused and continue pitching consistently.
Recognition like this not only uplifts the acclaimed player, but the whole team. “Being able to contribute to a big win like that and boosting team morale is always good,” he said. “It makes it a good ride back home and leaves a good taste in my mouth for the following games.”
Berger described his team as his family, like having his brothers beside him. “My team is everything,” he said. Berger continued, saying that his teammates are each other’s motivators and give each other a reason to fight to win the NCAA Division II National Championship—a feat so far unaccomplished in the college’s 130-year-old program but which was most recently almost achieved with a historic runner-up placement during the 2023 season.
