As rain dotted the domed glass ceiling in the Alfond Inn’s atrium, guests mingled amongst decadent appetizers and the sound of a piano playing Fred Rogers’ “Won’t You Be My Neighbor.” Everyone was gathered to celebrate the 10th anniversary of The Alfond Inn at Rollins.
The Alfond Inn at Rollins recently celebrated its 10th anniversary with new offerings: the opening of an art-filled wing featuring a cafe, spa, and more. The Alfond Inn expansion began construction in 2021 following delays due to COVID-19.
Since its opening in Aug. 2013, The Alfond Inn has been an integral part of the Rollins community, serving as the main source of funding for the Alfond Scholarship at Rollins, which provides several Rollins students with full scholarships.
The Alfond Inn was rated as a “Top 15 Resort Hotel in Florida” by Travel + Leisure in 2023 and as a “Reader’s Choice Award: Top 10 Hotels in Florida” by Conde Nast Traveler in 2022.
The New Wing
The original architect, Orlando-based Baker Barrios Architects, returned to design the new wing, which boasts 71 guestrooms. The opening of the wing increased the hotel’s capacity to 183 rooms. The Alfond Inn’s existing rooms have been renovated to match the updated color scheme and furnishings.
The Alfond Inn displays art installations which feature pieces from the Alfond Collection of Contemporary Art, a part of the Rollins Museum of Art’s (RMA’s) collection. According to a press release from The Alfond Inn, the inn is the only hotel in the country that serves as a formal extension of an art museum.
Austin Reeves, collection and exhibition manager at RMA, said that the art is changed annually each July. Installation of the new pieces has taken a week in the past, but with the expanded space, Reeves said it could take up to two weeks to install. Currently, there are 145 individual pieces on display throughout the hotel.
In the lobby, the new cafe serves coffee and light bites before transitioning to a bar and desert service in the evenings.
The expansion also includes a new boardroom and meeting room, adding 2,400 square feet to the hotel’s existing 10,000 square feet of meeting and event space.
The Spa
Aptly named “The Spa at The Alfond Inn,” The Spa is a 13,500-square-foot space located on the second floor of the new wing. It houses seven treatment rooms, a steam room and sauna, a new fitness area, and locker rooms. The Spa opens onto a 6,000-square-foot deck which features the hotel’s second swimming pool, private cabanas, a fountain, and a shaded, outside living room area.
“It’s been nice to have the time to refine everything and [get settled],” said lead spa therapist Carl Jordan in reference to the soft launch of The Spa.
The Spa welcomes both hotel guests and day visitors. Its services include massages, body treatments, and facials. Appointments can be made by visiting their website.
