It is time for the annual mtvU Woodie Awards again, which this year may include Rollins’ own radio station, WPRK.
For the past seven years, mtvU, a division of the MTV network catering to an audience of college students with underground and emerging artists, has hosted the Woodie Awards. The network claims that the Woodie Awards are “the definitive award show for college students and the music they care about.” Any college student can vote for the winners in all categories, so that the students truly determine the winners.
This year, the Woodie Awards are being held in Austin, Texas, during the South by Southwest Music Festival (SXSW) moving the award show from the traditional New York City venue.
The various “Woodies” featured are for Best Video, Performing, Left Field, Breaking and Woodie of the Year. The nominees for Woodie of the Year are Arcade Fire’s “The Suburbs,” the Black Keys’ “Tighten Up,” B.o.B. featuring Hayley Williams’ “Airplanes,” LCD Soundsystem’s “Drunk Girls,” and Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow.”
There also is a Woodie award for Best College Radio Station. WPRK was nominated along with another 49 college radio stations and made the cut of the top 25. This nomination has excited both the WPRK staff and Rollins community alike. WPRK listener Saabira Mohamed ’14 says, “It’s really neat because MTV is huge and I think it will help WPRK’s popularity on campus.” Adds Rob Soviero, promotion s director at WPRK, “Comparing it to the VMAs—which would never have an award like this— the Woodie Awards gives us a great opportunity to be seen and heard.”
On Feb. 15, the next round of cuts were made, leaving only the top 10. WPRK made it once again, securing a place in the final round, being recognized as one of the top 10 college radio stations in the country. No matter what happens next, the honor associated with the top 10 is still immense.
The mtvU Woodie Awards will broadcast live on March 16 at midnight on MTV, MTV2, and mtvU. Please support your college radio station and cast your vote now!
